It wasn’t a great experience. There was a power outage when I arrived, and it took 6 hours to get fixed. That may not have been the homestay’s fault, but it was still annoying. The shower was cold, and the staff weren’t helpful when I tried to arrange an Ijen trip. Ideally, you only need the room to store luggage while hiking Ijen or other nearby mountains, rather than staying here for long.
The rooms are basic, but the staff are amazing. They offer very cheap transport to Ijen and nearby coffee plantations, which are optional, and can drop you in banyuangi or at the ferry to bali for a very low price. The main person at reception speaks English pretty decently. He also took us to his wife’s school so we could meet the children and see what they do there. A 5 star experience!
The room was basic and cozy, made of bamboe, and we had a really nice stay. A super friendly guy joined us for lunch, then drove us in the evening to a special restaurant to try the typical peanut butter sauce. The one downside was a “deal” they offered us for the Ferry to bali and bus to Den Passar, for 125,000rup. We paid 6,500 for the Ferry and 40,000 for a minibus to Den Passar, and the toilet wasn’t very clean. Still, it’s definitely worth a visit!
This is the closest homestay to the bus station, and they offer some transportation options. The owner was friendly, generous, and very helpful. It felt like family, definitely 5 star.
