Hotel Yuriko

It’s about 100 meters from Jam Gadang, Bukittinggi’s landmark, and the price is reasonable. I stayed one night in a standard room and got two towels and soap. The room smelled, apparently from the bathroom, which wasn’t clean enough. The room had AC and a fan, but it was quite cold.

The staff were polite and the room fairly clean, but it was small, more like a kosan, and road noise was pretty loud. The TV didn’t work. There was carpet on the floor, and it seemed to hold moisture, leaving the room feeling humid. My room was on the fourth floor, up a narrow staircase.

There’s plenty of bustle on the street outside, and it’s a cheap hotel in a central tourist area. Jam Gadang clock tower, the city market, and Taman Panorama park are an easy walk away, with some places to eat nearby. The room was simple, without extras, but clean and comfortable enough. Breakfast was nice.

The bathrooms were always dirty, and there wasn’t a sink in any of the rooms, so washing your hands or face meant leaning over the toilet or getting your legs wet. Our first night was on the ground floor. The room was dirty and smelled horribly damp, and the beds seemed dirty too. Then the second night was a nightmare: we were put on the second floor facing the main road, with so much traffic noise it felt like sleeping right out in the road.
