For lunch, we had nasi goreng and gurame nyat-nyat, and both were surprisingly delicious. The afternoon was just as good: checking in at 2 pm in heavy rain, two staff came to meet us with umbrellas. It was a small thing, but it lifted my mood, especially since our rental car had none. Getting there early was a great call, since we were the first guests and had the natural spring pool to ourselves all afternoon. Watching locals fish and tend their gardens was so calming. We chose the villa for a quick break from our routine in Jakarta, and at IDR 874k a night it felt like much better value than the price suggested. The room was fine, though there were quite a lot of flies inside and out. They provide a big fan, which seemed odd when it was only 20°C in the evening, but it keeps the flies away while you sleep if you point it the opposite way. I’d wear sandals inside to avoid stepping on dead flies and to keep the bed clean. There are only three rooms facing Mount Abang and Lake Batur, right in front of the natural spring, so book quickly if that’s the spot you want. I just wish they could do something about the flies.

The views are what make this place: lake, mountains and sunrise, just fantastic. The location and staff were easily the best parts. The team were always smiling and happy to help, even with a big group drinking, playing music and making noise until midnight one night. The next morning I felt so bad seeing the mess they'd left by the pool that I picked up half of it before the breakfast shift arrived. I do feel for the staff, who are working in conditions they can't control. The flies are a huge problem. I know it's an agricultural area, but ownership could try to reduce them for guests and staff, maybe with fly-resistant plants by the bungalow entrances or screens around the porches. The rooms are basic, with few outlets and loose floorboards. Our fan rattled on the table because of the floor, and there was construction on new villas. You get what you pay for, I suppose. Food options were limited and a bit bland by Indonesian standards, but it did the job since everything else was a bit far and Grab wouldn't come here.

The fly problem is handled terribly. Yes, you say the place is near farmland. Who cares? We pay for the accommodation to be clean too. Pest control is vital. The owner has to do something about the flies!

I was charged for a Booking.com room for May 21-22, then got a cancellation without any explanation. Nobody answered when I called. I checked again and the same room was still available, now at a higher price. It looks like bookings are being deliberately cancelled so rooms can be resold for more. Very disappointing.

The nicest part was taking in the view and atmosphere from the pool at sunrise, with the hot spring water. Breakfast was tasty and service was good. The room was clean and the temperature felt comfortable, neither too hot nor too cold. The bathroom water may come from the same source as the hot spring, since I could taste a slightly sour, salty, sweet sulphur hint and sometimes smell sulphur. The pool itself is fed by the natural hot spring.
