It’s simple, but has what you need, including a clean toilet and a warm shower. Breakfast crêpes were amazing, the best I’ve had in Indonesia. Edwyn also gave us good advice on things to do around Kupang.

You can spend the day here too, and there’s an outdoor spot to enjoy the view whenever you like. One room has a sea view, while at least one other is a little cheaper without the view. Both are clean and comfortable, so I didn’t miss having the big window. The Lavalon is a great place to stay the night. Edwin, the owner, is kind and has a fascinating past. Before opening the hostel, he travelled around his own country so he could give people advice, and he knows everything about Indonesia. Just text him to book, and he can arrange any pick-up you need with his driver Jack. Jack may seem a bit grumpy at first, but he’s very nice and the safest, most careful driver ever. My room was clean, quiet, and right by the shore, with strong Wi-Fi and a new air conditioner. I stayed there on and off for 7 days and found it comfortable for the price: a small double bed, good sheets and mattress, plus a little basin and shower. The guest house itself could use some care, but the owner gives helpful advice. Breakfast is banana pancake, and there are plenty of books to swap. Alfamart is just around the corner, the center is close, and you can rent a motorbike nearby. It isn’t on Booking, so message him on WhatsApp. Lonely Planet used to list it as a favorite.

Edwin looked after me from booking through to departure, including arranging a ride to the port and checking I had what I needed. I was travelling alone, and my stay at Lavalon felt truly five-star. The room was comfortable, the breakfast pancake was delicious, and his Indonesia travel tips were great. I’d happily recommend staying here.
