Sulis Beach Hotel and Spa

The rooms are lovely, the pool area is beautiful, and the hotel is near both the beach and other amenities. But a lot of small things cost extra: you have to pay for ice and microwave use, and they only give you two bottles of water each day. Other hotels offer free filtered water in the corridor. There are no irons for guests, so they push you toward the laundry service, which charges by the item. Breakfast is limited, and if you're used to a buffet, this may disappoint. No fresh juice either, just a very sweet cordial mix.

We only had a short stay, so the pool will have to wait for another visit. The breakfast and the view were both highlights, and our room was very spacious. With the beach and several restaurants quite close, we'd happily return for another quick getaway.

The rooms were adequate for the price, and the porter was lovely. Reception, though, was a different story: the staff were surly and had poor manners over basic things like saying please and thank you. This is a hospitality business, and asking politely for a passport matters. I wouldn't rate this as a four-star hotel. Two stars feels more accurate, and the reception team needs better training and manners. I also couldn't get anyone to answer the phone, not once across more than two dozen calls before and during our stay. That included trying to confirm check-in, ask about rooftop pool hours, and get a call transferred to my room to wake my wife for the airport. It felt dismissive and below international standards. The nearby beach isn't good for swimming either. The waves break almost 200 m offshore, and there are many boats, with pollution and oil in the water.

The facilities themselves felt five-star, but the management's response to a medical problem was so uncaring and focused on money that I would give it zero. At 1 AM, my mother became seriously ill with diarrhea, possibly from contaminated water in Bali. We'd only drunk water sold as mineral water, though it seemed local sellers might be labeling ordinary filtered water that way. The reception had no basic medicines for diarrhea or fever, or even a first-aid kit. They offered to call an ambulance but wouldn't help with immediate minor medical needs. In heavy rain, I had to walk through dirty floodwater up to my knees to find a pharmacy and medicine for my mother. I also asked the restaurant for plain rice boiled with extra water, a simple porridge my sick mother could manage. On the fourth morning, even though breakfast was paid for, they refused during breakfast service. They charged IDR 11,000 for plain rice that she couldn't eat, so I went out to find porridge. One receptionist was kind and helped arrange it for IDR 60,000, and I appreciated her professionalism. The next morning, another receptionist ignored my request and said she didn't know how to book it online. I had to walk around asking several restaurants before finding porridge again. One receptionist did show kindness, but the overall experience felt inhumane, irresponsible, and unacceptable for a hotel claiming professional standards. Please think about how you'd judge yourselves if this happened to your own family. What we went through was complete nonsense and a failure of basic human care.
