The Grand Palace Hotel Malang

The courtyard view from the rooms is lovely, with four evenly spaced trees surrounded by green vines, a tidy garden, and a fish pond. The building itself has beautiful old floors, columns, and molding, and the facilities were very clean. Staff were attentive, and the front desk service was superb. The location worked well for me, with important sights within walking distance, and tour groups know the hotel and will pick guests up here. My three-night stay ended with checkout on 01 Oct 2025. The rooms were comfortable, and the place really does feel like a grand palace. My main annoyance was people smoking on the verandas around the courtyard on all three floors. The person next door regularly smoked outside his door, and the smell bothered me at times. Smoking in rooms is prohibited, with an additional 500,000 IDR charge if you do it there. I appreciated the staff and enjoyed the stay overall.

The staff were especially kind and understanding when I accidentally left my sneakers behind. They took the time to arrange shipping and send them back to me, and I really appreciate the care they put into it. It means a lot. Thanks again for going the extra mile 🥰😍 My stay was wonderful too: a quiet, clean room, comfortable beds, and a great shower with hot water.

The garden gives you a lovely, peaceful view, and the room was a good size for two. The bathroom was nice, with fresh-smelling towels each day. The town square, or alun-alun, is close, and you can walk to groceries, laundry, an ATM, and other things. Just know the walk itself isn't especially pleasant: there are hardly any sidewalks and traffic gets pretty busy.

For $60, this felt unbelievably good value. The building has the look of an 18th-century palace, with paintings, statues, and a big central garden, all with a retro feel. My room had a classical industrial style, was clean and fresh, and had a balcony overlooking the whole garden. I could imagine a place like this costing $600 in Australia.
