Sandat Mas Cottages

We were really pleased with this place. It's about a 10 minute walk to the main Uluwatu surf break, right down to the water, and the location meant we didn't have to pay for parking each time. Last time we stayed a 15 minute drive away in worse accommodation for more money. The room was spacious, clean, and had air conditioning. We'd gone in expecting little after reading reviews and thinking there wouldn't be AC, so we were very glad to be wrong. The only drawbacks were that no drinking water was provided and there was no soap or body wash in the bathroom. I'd recommend staying here.

It's quiet here, away from the action on the other side of the bridge, but everything is only a couple of minutes away by scooter. A short walk down the stairs takes you to the cliff and the cave and waves, and the place is close to the surf and temple too. I've stayed several times and it's been great each visit. The family running it are really nice, the rooms are large and comfortable, and the room I've had more than once has a great view of the waves and ocean. The fresh juice at breakfast is the best. It's a very good spot to relax.

The location is around a 650 m walk from Uluwatu Beach and the legendary Delpi café, with its equally legendary sea views. Pura Uluwatu, which has dramatic views too, is 1.5 km away. Since Sandat Mas Cottages sits off the beach cliffs, there isn't a view from the property itself, though a pool-facing room gives you a lovely garden view from the porch. There's a small, lovely pool set in a beautifully landscaped garden. The rooms are plain but spacious, with large porches that are roomy enough for a vigorous yoga session, and the air conditioning works well. The attached toilet has a thatched roof and open sides, giving it a rustic feel.

After two nights here, I would absolutely not recommend it to anyone. The room wasn't clean, there were ants, and there wasn't even a nightstand. The staff weren't nice, and the price wasn't justified. Even if it were cheaper, I wouldn't return. The worst part was when I went to reception for toilet paper. One of the hotel's three dogs barked at me and started biting my leg. I ran, and all three dogs chased me down the street barking. When I got back, the woman at reception just laughed. I couldn't understand what was funny about her dogs chasing a guest, and there was no apology at all. This was the worst experience I've had in Bali. I hope I can keep other people from going through the same thing.
