Toraja Misiliana Hotel

We especially liked the restaurant opposite reception, and dinner there was excellent. Breakfast had plenty of tasty Indonesian and Western choices too. We stayed three nights in a lovely, spotless Cottage. There are traditional Sulawesi houses around the hotel, a pleasant garden for strolling, and a roomy pool with a separate area for kids. The Front Office team were welcoming, and Pak Samuel was particularly helpful. A good choice for spending a few days in Tana Toraja.

The rooms could use some updating, though newer touches would be nice alongside the old-fashioned character. Also, water comes in refillable jugs rather than bottles, which some guests might find less convenient or have hygiene concerns about. The bathroom water pressure was very low, and the outdoor lighting at night could be brighter for comfort and safety. It was also a little confusing to find some rooms, so clearer signs would help. Even with those issues, this is one of Toraja's best-known, comfortable hotels. The grounds feel peaceful and fresh, with trees, fragrant orchids in bloom, and cool mountain air. Our spacious superior room had a veranda looking out over rice fields, and nights were quiet with nature sounds. The staff were very friendly and helpful, always greeting us warmly. Breakfast was generous, with local and international dishes, tropical fruit including jackfruit, eggs, bread, and other traditional food. There are lots of international travelers, which gives the hotel an international feel. I recommend it for a calm, nature-filled stay with warm service and easy access to major cultural sites.

The place looks lovely, but the walls between rooms are so thin that you can hear everything. In rooms 212/213, cats chasing mice in the space between the ceiling and roof kept us awake at night, which isn't what I'd expect at this price. The kitchen also took up to 1 hour 40 minutes to make a simple nasi goreng.

What stayed with me most was the atmosphere. Toraja Misiliana Hotel feels like a connection to Toraja's traditions, landscape, and hospitality, and the staff help make that feeling real. They're attentive and sincere, happy to share stories or help guests understand the local culture. Their warmth felt genuine. The grounds combine traditional Toraja design with modern comforts, including carved wood, roomy pavilions, and rooflines like the noble tongkonan houses. The rooms are spacious and airy, with views of gardens or the mountains. Mornings brought cool mist and quiet, and the facilities and cleanliness were well kept, with a comfortable but simple feel. The restaurant serves Indonesian dishes alongside international comfort food. Meals come slowly and generously, like being welcomed into a Toraja family's home. Breakfast by the garden is peaceful, and dinner under soft lights makes a nice end to the day. It feels like more than a place to sleep, with comfort and culture coming together in a peaceful, soulful experience of Toraja.
