Wisma Papa Tia Toraja

The location made a great base for seeing Toraja’s beautiful sights. Yakub guided us for two days and took us to some impressive places. The breakfasts and dinners were good, everyone was friendly, the bathroom was clean, and the price was reasonable. What we missed was the feeling of actually staying in someone’s home and getting to know the people who live there. That personal connection wasn’t there outside the guided tour, and the guest building is separate from the main house, so it felt more like a hostel than a homestay. The room also had a few problems: the sheets slipped off the mattress as soon as we lay down, and the carpet was dirty. The rental scooters were in poor shape, with no lights and very weak brakes, which felt dangerous at night and on downhill roads. We also wished communication with Yakub had been better. He made choices about spending our money, such as buying things or giving donations, without checking with us first. We would have preferred to be asked. Once he changed the pickup time with the driver without telling us the actual reason. More honesty and openness would have helped a lot. It’s a good starting point for a Toraja trip, but there’s room to improve, especially if you’re looking for a real homestay experience.

For the price, this was great value. The guest house is tucked into the jungle, with simple, authentic rooms and good toilets and showers. The owner is super friendly and knows the area well, including where funerals are happening around the villages. He’s a great guide too, and a full day on a scooter costs 600k. His daughter cooked really tasty food. The owner also arranged a bus for us to Poso and a shared car to Luwuk.

We wished we could stay forever. The rooms were clean, the bed was very comfortable, and there was a place to hang out with the other hosts. Most of all, we loved Yansen as our host and guide. He was fantastic, passionate about his work, and really humble. You can see the quality of his website too. Being with a local family and sharing their beautiful culture and traditions felt like a dream. The location is really good, and you can have dinner there and rent a scooter. I highly recommend the place and tours with local guides!

Yacob made me feel welcome right away with his kindness and warm, friendly manner. He was always attentive and ready to help with anything I needed. I also learned so much from his patient explanations of his homeland’s rich traditions, which gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation. I couldn’t have asked for a better guide or companion. Highly recommend!
