Kotta Hotel Semarang

Cemil @ Kotta Hotel, Semarang, November 2025 For 125 K IDR, I got a grilled chicken toasty along with a warm shower and amenities. Kotta Hotel offers a reasonably affordable way to freshen up after an overnight or red-eye train, which I haven't seen become common in Indonesia (AFAIK). It's only a 9-minute walk from Tawang Station in the middle of town, and starting the day there after the train ride felt scenic and refreshing. The breakfast buffet doesn't have much variety, but the food is well prepared, better than most Indonesian hotel buffets I've tried, even at places that look fancier. The free-flow grilled chicken and fresh al dente baked beans stood out, especially if you like loading up on low-carb options. The sandwich's poached eggs had a great texture and were cooked just right, with fluffy whites. I liked that the eggs were low-sodium to balance the well-seasoned grilled chicken underneath, though I would've preferred a bit more salt on the eggs and more pepper overall. The sourdough was soft and had a good texture, but I personally like my toast more golden. I reckon the sandwich is 75 K, and with unlimited drinks, soup, beans, grilled chicken, and the 50 K shower option, it's a real deal. Since the road leading to the hotel closes to vehicles every day at 6:00 PM, you'll need to take the back street to get there. Once you're in the old town, you can walk around at night and enjoy the live music and food nearby.

The location is excellent, but parking is limited. Having guests handle registration with a QR code felt a bit awkward. Staff service and cleanliness both need improvement.

The view from our Blenduk room was lovely, looking out onto the church and square, and it was nice that we could open the window. The location is A+, but the room was cramped, with no room for two suitcases, and cleanliness could've been better. We found several long black hairs left by previous visitors. Calling a place an 'art hotel' sets a certain expectation: in my experience, it often means more thought went into the architecture than practicality. This one was no exception. The bathroom was separated from the bedroom by a glass panel that was only partly covered, so if one of us was using it, the other couldn't stand up without seeing the whole show.
