Asoka Homestay

Everything was shabby and messy, with the smell of cat pee everywhere. We got there at 10 AM and were told our room wasn't ready, so we should come back at 2. When we returned, nobody was there, and we waited in the sun with our luggage for over an hour. We left.

The homestay was clean, the host was great, and the breakfast was amazing. It's right in the middle of Senggigi, behind a big hotel. They rent out the nicest and cheapest motorbikes around, and ours was new and in very good condition. Laundry and shuttle buses are available too. The downsides are no hot water and very low shower pressure, but for the price and facilities, I'd definitely come back.

The downstairs room we had smelled moldy, probably because the sheets on our beds seemed dirty or moldy. Apart from that, the place looked very clean. I mostly agree with the other commenters that it's a nice, clean, budget stay. I'd have given it four stars, but the awkward location doesn't have a proper connection to the main street, so I took one off for that too.

The owners and their family were friendly, and they could explain the things we had questions about. The beds were clean and comfortable when we arrived, breakfast was included and delicious, and tea and coffee came with it. We paid Rp. 180k after some haggling, which seemed reasonable. WiFi was included and worked decently, useful now and then for emailing loved ones. The location was great, just a two minute walk from Senggigi's main strip, but far enough back for things to get quieter. It was easy to find. Two friends and I came across Asoka by chance during a stay almost a year earlier, May 5-7, 2015, and I'm glad we did. One night we walked straight up into the hills behind Senggigi from the end of Asoka's road, then followed a smaller road for about two hours. The view was beautiful. We also wandered into the back roads that night, and a local family invited us in for coffee when they realized we didn't really know where we were going. The next day we had lunch with three construction workers building the second level of Asoka. Their noise didn't bother us, and one of them turned out to be related to one of the owners, a nice connection. Compared with other homestays I've visited in Indonesia, Asoka deserves four stars. I held back the last one for a few small things that could have been improved, including bits of the bathroom. Complaining about them feels a little snobby, and they may have been fixed in the year since. Compared with some other places I've slept, Asoka was fantastic.
