Bumi Segah Hotel

The room was acceptable overall, though a bit dusty. The food needs work. I had dinner on the 11th floor, and none of the dishes I tried were acceptable. The Caesar salad was tiny, with very little veg, some anchovies and smoked beef, and no Caesar dressing. The sirloin was underseasoned, and the mushroom sauce was a complete failure. It should have been thickened with a butter roux instead of cheap margarine. I'm rating the hotel against its stated star level. The condiments and food ingredients don't meet what I understand to be four-star hotel standards. Management should reset its menu standards and improve the ingredients.

The restaurant is the letdown. Breakfast has the taste and limited variety of a two-star hotel in Java-Bali, so there isn't much to look forward to in the morning. Other places in Berau may be worse, but this isn't five-star dining. I hope Mercure opens soon. The back building's newer rooms are huge and stylish, and at around $50 for a super deluxe room, the price is low. My office books here whenever I'm traveling in the area. I think it has the best rooms in Berau right now. But in every room I've stayed in over the past two years, there has been visible mold in the gap between the sink and vanity. I've been lucky not to get one of the old front-building rooms. Colleagues refused to stay in those because of the smell and some annoying paranormal experiences 🤣.

I was impressed by the team's hospitality and the hotel's quality, especially for the price and in a small city. My room was modern and clean. I tried the Asian restaurant, where the food was great, and also had a wonderful spa massage. There are two restaurants, Asian and Western. Breakfast is a buffet, mostly Indonesian dishes. A few more Western choices would be nice, but I still had a good experience.

The breakfast and bed were excellent. The hotel is too close to the mosque, though, and my room wasn't very clean. The hallway didn't smell good either.
