If you love cats, you’ll have a great time here. There are lots of them. You can also rent a bike at one of the most affordable rates around, and the owner can take you to the airport if you need a ride. Definitely 5/5.

We were three German siblings traveling around North Moluku, and this was easily the best homestay we stayed in. Riswan picked us up from the airport, and his deep knowledge of the islands and nearby area became a big part of our trip. In Ternate, asking people around you can be more useful than doing online research. His wife and son lovingly look after some orphan cats, and the whole family shared their Ramadan fast-breaking meal with us. Their Muslim hospitality was humbling, and they’re such kind people. Our room and bathroom were clean, and the motorbike rental was legitimate and fairly priced. North Moluku isn’t Bali, and it doesn’t have the established setup a Western tourist might expect. Still, if you’re willing to get off the beaten path, you may be surprised by the kindness and decency of the people in Ternate. Thanks for having us, Riswan and family. See you soon!
The rooms are clean, the beds are very comfortable, breakfast tastes good, and the new terrace is amazing. But it’s Riswan and Bunda who make the place special. They’re incredibly friendly and help with whatever information or support you need for Maluku utara. I’ve stayed in many places in Indonesia, and Riswan homestay is my favorite. When I’m back in Ternate, this is the place I’ll choose.
The view of Gamalama Mountain from Riswan’s comfortable, clean house is awesome. He and his family make you feel very welcome, and he knows plenty about things to do in Ternate and Hamahera. Highly recommend!
Riswan and Rina welcome you with their home, their hearts, and their staff. They even run a private school downstairs. You’ll eat well, pick up some Bahasa Indonesia, and can get a climb on Gamalama organized, plus plenty more. Probably the most welcoming place in all of Indonesia, hard as that is to believe. Enjoy!
