The views around Bongkasa are hard to put into words, and getting to Ubud, Gianyar, or Denpasar was easy. I stayed in Paviliun 1 for nine months, and it felt like a place I could call home. The room was tidy, the layout comfortable, and everything felt well above what I expected for the rate. Pak Artha and his Family were wonderfully welcoming and caring throughout my stay. I’ll definitely return on my next business trip.
I’ve been here nearly a year, and it still feels like a dream I first pictured during the pandemic. As a New Yorker moving abroad for the first time, Pondok Sayan was the perfect place to land. I remember answering the ad and seeing the property as if it were yesterday. The community made me feel welcome right away. On my tour, they showed me tiny home options that fit my preferences and budget, and answered all my many questions in depth. I’ve also been able to volunteer my English skills with local youth, which has become a really fulfilling cultural exchange. Guests can join ceremonies too, and I’ve learned more about Balinese Hindu culture through them. I’m grateful to live on ancestral land cared for by our resident Mangku, his family, the ancestors, and the deities. There’s a real sense of freedom and safety here, whether I’m heading to the pool, walking by Ayung, or biking to the local market. When I want a little city energy, I can take a motorbike ride through the rice fields to central Ubud in about 20 minutes. The place itself has a lovely, bright feel, with sunlight and thoughtful aesthetics. Even warm tropical rain is beautiful here, and makes it easier to slow down and “take rest,” as the Balinese say. The fountain over the koi pond is soothing and hypnotic. Living among the lush landscape, I wake to birds and insects, and enjoy the scented flowers, organic herbs, fruit, and vegetables the land produces. There were some adjustments for me, but I love being surrounded by nature. We cook dishes from our different countries together and often sing karaoke under the starry, moonlit sky, usually with plenty of laughs. I’ve traded a fast, overstimulating city life and fast food for community, mindfulness, self-love, reflection, and learning to reprogram myself. Mother Bali has been very kind to me. I’m still learning, but with fewer distractions I can focus on embracing myself and my purpose. I feel more aligned as a spiritual being, with less focus on always doing, and a simpler life through the eyes of The Most High. If that speaks to you, Pondok Sayan may feel like h(OM)e.
Set in a quiet spot away from the bustle, this was a peaceful retreat. The family running the place were caring and made me feel part of their community. I also appreciated the chance to learn about Balinese traditions and take part in the culture. I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for calm with a cultural touch 🤍🤍
Surrounded by nature and rice fields, the setting is beautiful and away from the traffic, while still close to Ubud. I had the best time with Wayan and his family. They made me feel at home from day one, and I’ve never met people so kind. Getting to join their ceremonies and learn about their fascinating culture made the stay even more special. If you want an authentic Balinese experience, this is the place!!!
After spending many seasons in Ubud, I moved to Sayan because the traffic and tourist numbers were increasing. I stayed in this lovely family compound for a month and liked it a lot. The rice fields are beautiful to ride through, and there’s plenty of peace around. Recommended for solo travelers who like a small space and quiet, and don’t mind taking a scooter for the 20-minute trip to the main center!
