Villa Romantica is still a beautiful, spacious place, and we love it, but this was our fourth visit and the first under new management. We hope it gets cleaned and refurbished soon. The grounds are lovely, with a charming koi pond. The pool’s waterfall feature is nice, and there’s a big open living area plus another place to relax with daybeds and a TV. Agus, the villa manager, and the staff are lovely. The villa used to have two bedrooms; a third has now taken the place of the balcony overlooking rice paddies and ducks. This part of Ubud has become much more developed, with building sites and new homes replacing much of the greenery. Breakfast used to be included, cooked and served each morning, as is common at Bali villas. It isn’t included now. Cleaning also needs serious attention. Two bedroom shower recesses had mould and hair clogging them. When we raised it, someone tried wiping the mould with a face cloth, which was left there, and the showers were still dirty. The pebblecrete floor looked like it hadn’t been scrubbed in a long time, and at least one toilet had dirty streaks. The bathrooms need regular scrubbing and mould treatment in Bali’s humidity. Cleaners should also have at least four hours before the next guests arrive. We checked out at 12:30 pm, and the next guests were due at 2 pm. A large three-bedroom villa used by five people for a week needs enough time to be cleaned and sterilised. We suspect the same happened before our arrival. The staff seem diligent and lovely, but may not know the expected cleaning standard; some training could help. There are maintenance problems too. Pool tiles were coming loose and bedroom curtain rails were falling down. My husband’s 74-year-old mother hurt her back trying to open the very heavy sliding teak and glass bedroom doors, which all of us struggled to open and close flush. One night, the fan in the bedroom by the daybed area, where we stayed, seemed as if it might fall from the ceiling.

We arrived outside the property at 5:50 pm and couldn’t get anyone to answer when we called to say we were there. We were left waiting with our luggage in the dark until 7:10. The property manager was extremely rude. After housekeeping the next day, wet towels were still on the floor, and there was a stray dog inside the property. The service was awful, and even after we complained, management only sent an automated reply. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

The room had ants and geckos, and we found their droppings on the bedding. Hygiene at the villa was well below standard. We reported this serious problem to the manager, but he wouldn’t offer any compensation for the inconvenience. The washing machine seemed ancient, there was no detergent, and honestly, nobody dared use it.

The location was the highlight for us. We stayed five nights in late June and early July 2024, with our two kids, in a quiet neighbourhood close to several nice restaurants and a short drive from central Ubud. The villa itself was clean, the bedrooms had working air conditioning, and the bathrooms were spacious and supplied with amenities. The open layout means bugs can get in throughout the villa except for the two bedrooms. We didn’t mind, but wanted to mention it. The pool was dirty, and housekeeping’s attempt to clean it didn’t help much. A cleaner pool would have made the stay much nicer. Also, there’s no manager on site, so arrange your arrival with them ahead of time. We hadn’t, and after calling the number on the front door, waited about 45 minutes for the manager to let us in. I think a message in advance could have avoided that.

A lovely garden, a fish pond, a nice pool with cool water and two huge places to relax made this villa great for our weekend break. It’d work well for a longer stay too, and the neighbourhood is quiet. The location deserves a mention: BGS, Alchemy, Brie and Zest, some of Ubud’s top rated restaurants, are just around the corner. Central Ubud is five minutes away by car. Definitely recommend.
