The Kotenang

The café food was great, and I can see this place has potential. But the stay itself was a letdown: the toilet wasn't clean, the Wi-Fi didn't work, and the power went out four times. We couldn't find staff when we needed help, and service was still very slow even though the hotel was nearly empty. Management needs to improve a lot.

The grounds were a real highlight for the kids: a tidy, colorful garden, a clean pool, and a little zoo with sheep and peacocks. We were eight, so we booked a family room plus a deluxe room. The family room had two bedrooms, giving us three rooms altogether, and there was plenty of space. Breakfast was included for two per room, but the café and restaurant took orders in the morning, so the children could eat too. We drove to Central Java with Wonosobo as our second stop. I found The Kotenang while looking for a place to stay about a week before we left. The wooden cabins and the café and restaurant looked appealing in the photos. It seemed to be a fairly new place, about a year old, and most Google reviews were positive, so I booked. It turned out to be one of my best decisions on the trip. The rooms were spacious, clean, comfortable, and nicely done, with a smart TV and wardrobe. The sheets and pillowcases smelled fresh. My one gripe with the family room was the lack of a nightlight. At bedtime, we had to choose between total darkness and leaving the bathroom door ajar for a little light. The bathrooms were bright, clean, and roomy, with a water heater and enough amenities. In the family room, though, the water pressure dropped and the water stopped getting hot when someone in the next room was using it. We didn't have that issue in the deluxe room. We enjoyed the restaurant too. The food and coffee were tasty and reasonably priced, and service there was quick and responsive. The complimentary fried rice and grilled chicken at breakfast were especially good. Staff throughout The Kotenang were friendly and prompt, from check-in to check-out. Before we headed back to Jakarta, one of the team even walked us to the front reception. The rates were very affordable even over a long weekend. I'd put The Kotenang on my must-visit list and would happily come back. Great work, The Kotenang Team! 🫶🏼
