We only stayed one night, but the service was excellent. Mas Wasno, the hotel employee, was really helpful and even told us about Bumu Ayu seafood restaurant nearby. The place is actually a house, very homey, in kota Gede, away from the crowds in central malioboro. Balai melayu means melayu Tribe house, and there's information about the melayu tribe all through the house, including a library, a historical chart, and traditional clothes. The room has a unique touch too, with a keris ornament used as the door handle.

Breakfast changed from day to day, and the staff were very polite. The hotel was affordable, the room was very clean, and they provided free water each day as well as a water dispenser. The decorations were interesting too, almost like a small museum.

I really liked the open space and the breakfast. The Malay cultural items and atmosphere make this a very unique place in the heart of Yogya.
