Grand Marto Hotel

We expected little because the place was cheap, but the dirt was still shocking. The rooms were much smaller than the booking photos suggested, barely enough space to walk around the double bed. Old furniture was partly broken, there was dust everywhere and dead cockroaches, the sheets were stained, and the pillows were covered in mold. We left despite having paid in advance for a non-refundable stay, because those pillows seemed like a serious health risk. After complaining to the booking platform, we did get a voucher. It's a shame, since the common area looks nice, with a fish pond and running water, and the location beside the Prawirotaman neighborhood is great. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The garden, interior, and decorations are nice, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good and the place was clean. But it looks fancier than it is, just an average hotel. The main road makes it noisy, though some rooms farther from it are fine. Bring earplugs if you're in one of the noisier rooms. The beds have springs and were so uncomfortable, almost like sleeping on a water bed. A good bed matters most to me, and design matters less, so I wouldn't recommend it.

The room was small, dark, and damp, with mold on the walls and a musty smell. The bathroom smelled like a sewer, and the cheap spring beds shook like an earthquake whenever either of us moved. There were lots of mosquitoes from the pool. Traffic from the busy street was noisy, and you could smell its pollution. The location is great, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, and shops nearby, though the area is quite touristy rather than authentically local. The garden patio and reception decor are beautiful, and the helpful staff all spoke good English. Even so, it wasn't worth the money.

Room 7 was far enough from the entrance and road to stay quiet. The room was small but consistently clean, with working AC and about four power sockets, two beside the bed. The bathroom is tiny but clean, with hot running water. Free toiletries meant soap but no shampoo. The soap was soft enough to use on the body, maybe it has oils. A hairdryer is available on request and is okay. There's no fridge in the room, but helpful staff will store things in the kitchen fridge if needed. For breakfast, you can pick two items from a list: omelette toast, strawberry toast, chocolate toast, fried rice (nisa goreng), or fried noodles. It was good enough for me, and I recommend the fried rice. Tea, instant coffee, and water from a cooler are available around the clock. I was traveling by bike, so the free parking at the entrance was convenient. There's also a small 24-hour store next door for water, toiletries, snacks, and mobile top-ups. The staff are really friendly and helpful. A reasonably priced, clean place in a handy spot for anyone who just needs to sleep in a cool room on a comfy bed in Yogya.
