The convenient walk to famous Malioboro street, the low price, and the friendly owner and staff were definite pluses. The place was clean and tidy, with a shared kitchen that had a stove top, microwave, fridge, freezer, large dining table, and a big flatscreen TV for live football and tennis. There were plenty of sockets, hot water, and bottled water always available. The AC worked, though it was a bit weak. There were some drawbacks. The rooms felt tight and had few surfaces for putting things down. Towels smelled musty and felt rough. During my three-night stay, I saw a rat or mouse about fist-sized run up the stairs twice, once in the day and once in the evening. The kettle didn’t switch off after boiling, which felt like a fire hazard. Breakfast was basic: fried rice with chicken, egg and chilli, or a fried egg, or fried Indomie with a fried egg, plus fresh fruit juice. Coffee and jasmine tea were always on the kitchen counter. The place is near a mosque, so there were prayer announcements five times a day. You also have to unlock and lock the front entrance whenever you leave or come in, including for food deliveries, which was a bit inconvenient.

Once inside, the ground floor was very spacious, where the family stayed. It took some effort to find the place because the entrance was a metal cringe fence. My room was on the third floor, reached by a metal staircase. It was large, the bedding was comfortable, and there was air-con. The bathroom was roomy too, with a nice shower. Breakfast was served every morning. It’s a nice homestay run by a Muslim family.

The owners are lovely and friendly, and the housekeeper went out of her way to make us comfortable. I loved the place. The house is amazing, our room was big and clean, and breakfast was fresh and nice.
