The photos make this place look far better than it is, much like the front desk staff’s smiles. Expect to be charged extra for things. If you use the pool, make sure to shower afterwards. You might want to bring your own sheets too.

The neighbourhood worked perfectly for us, with interesting shops, loads of food options, and pleasant streets for walking. We loved the pool, the breakfasts, and the clean, nice rooms, as well as the lovely staff and the building’s atmosphere and architecture. We first extended our stay here, then tried a more expensive hotel. Its room was so bad that we couldn’t stay, so we came back to the Grand Palace. We loved it here.

I could happily spend the whole day going between my room and the yard. The building leans a bit heavily into Greco Roman style, but the rooms themselves are fairly simple. When I told the receptionist the WiFi in my room was too weak for a Zoom class the next day, she kindly moved me to another room so I wouldn’t have to worry about the connection. I appreciated that. My only complaint was when it started raining suddenly as I was about to go out. I asked to borrow an umbrella, and the receptionist said it was broken. Oops. I thought that wouldn’t happen in a Japanese hotel, then felt like I might have been asking too much.

The location is really convenient, close to everything, and the staff are friendly. Breakfast had plenty of choices and was tasty. The room needs some work though: the doors squeak, the air conditioning is very noisy, the towels are badly worn, and the shampoo and soap are very runny. The WiFi isn’t good either.

Great spot for taking photos, with a great pool and rooms. The staff were great too, and the location is good with cafes nearby.
