We all loved our meals, and couldn’t fault the sensational food. The drinks and service were fantastic too. McMunns was our favourite restaurant on our trip around Ireland, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting Ballybunion.

The lamb was so good that we were already thinking about cancelling a night or two elsewhere just to come back and eat it again, maybe four more times. We’re staying here overnight, with breakfast in the morning before the rest of our holiday. If you get the chance, have a meal, a couple of pints, and stay at McMunn’s. We were blown away. We were craving food this good and had spent a lot chasing it. Here, the plates were unassuming but perfectly done, the flavors complex and robust, and nothing felt pretentious. No ridiculous plating or long speech about the chef’s inspiration, just a polite “enjoy” before the lamb arrived. We both said “Wow” at the same time, with the same stunned, delighted look. Before that, we ordered the lamb on our server’s recommendation. She said she wasn’t much of a seafood fan and couldn’t advise us on that part of the menu, but lamb was her favorite. We also tried the scallops, a daily special. They were cooked to absolute perfection, served with a delicious sauce that complemented them without taking away from them. They may only be available when the restaurant can get them, since they’re not on the main menu. We started with oysters, the best I’ve had, and could have eaten another 20. They were a great sign of the quality of the ingredients. Then came the mussels, which we’ve enjoyed all over Ireland and never been let down by. The broth at McMunn’s was on another level, with cream, white wine, garlic, shallots, parsley, and a rich, dreamy taste. I could have bathed in it if that wouldn’t waste a drop. Simple ingredients, executed far beyond what you usually find in fine dining. It’s rare to find such a comfortable middle ground. McMunn’s has welcoming staff who aren’t patronizing, straightforward but comfortable rooms, and the best meal we’ve had so far in Ireland. It’s one we’ll remember for a long time. A meal like this can take years to find, if you ever do.

Calvin made me an amazing Whiskey sour, one of the best cocktails I’ve had in ages, and it was perfectly done. The pub is beautiful and cozy, with fantastic atmosphere and musicians. I love a live band.

We returned for New Year’s Eve 2024 and had an exceptional night. Greg, Una, and the staff went above and beyond to make guests feel like family, and many of the guests were family. Greg and the kitchen team made an incredible 10-course New Year’s Eve menu. The rooms were still amazing, just as I described below. We first spent a lovely few days here in April 2024 for Herself’s birthday. The rooms were spacious and clean, with great water pressure and temperature. The view of the beach, castle, and water was fabulous. Parking is on the street across from McMunn's. The food was unbelievable. We had mussels and crab claws to start, both very good, followed by lamb, steak, cod, and duck, all excellent. They cooked the steak to your taste. The lamb was tender and full of flavor, the cod light and flaky, and the duck lean rather than fatty, skilfully prepared and full of flavor. The sides worked well with the mains. We also loved the lemon cheesecake and chocolate cake. Service was attentive and professional. Una and Greg were gracious, personable hosts and lovely to talk with. The bar had good craic and music. I can’t stop raving about the place. We’ll be back.
