Caldra B&B

Jerry was a genuinely kind welcome at Caldra B&B in Buncrana. He greeted me warmly, helped with directions, and the views are beautiful. The rest of my stay was a very different experience because of Marie. I was travelling alone and had used a B&B Ireland voucher, which I understood covered the whole stay. Marie said she wanted another €33 because the room was usually for two people. There had been no warning when I booked, and I don't see why a solo guest should be charged extra. I paid after questioning it, just to get the unpleasant exchange over with. The next morning, before even welcoming me, Marie confronted me in the hallway about that charge. At breakfast she then told me to move because another guest usually sat in my spot. I said I would just leave, and did. It started the night before: I had called as a courtesy to say I expected to arrive around 8 p.m., and was told, “You better not be later than that.” After dinner, I came back to find a handwritten note on my bed demanding the €33, with no explanation. Marie later gave the double occupancy reason. The way the voucher system works may have been misunderstood, but the surcharge still felt absurd. This was the most inhospitable B&B stay I've had in Ireland. Jerry was great, but Marie came across as cold and condescending, and others have apparently commented on her cold nature too. Solo travellers and people using vouchers should be wary. I wouldn't return. She needs to do better, or perhaps do something else.

The house is beautiful, and breakfast was great. It felt luxurious.

The owner was so friendly, and the B&B was lovely. We booked one night, then decided to add another because we liked it so much. I'd happily stay again.

A really lovely place, very clean and well run. The room was nice and breakfast was great. I'd definitely recommend it.
