The Gate Hotel

I’m very disappointed, and the stay ruined my trip. The noise went on past the bar’s stated 2:30 am closing time, continuing until 4:30. Then, what sounded like beer kegs being moved along the path to the pub below started around 6 am. At 3 am I called to ask how to turn off the heat and was told the radiators on the second floor don’t turn off. The gentleman at reception didn’t seem to make any effort to help. I asked for water because it was so hot, but was told there was none on site. That was when I decided I couldn’t stay another night. I booked somewhere else because I felt there’d be no help if I needed it. There was no refund, so be aware if you book. The nearby hotel I switched to was about 100 metres away, the same price, and the quality was superb. I’d steer clear of this place.

Booking was easy, the staff were friendly, and they gave me a higher floor room when I asked. The room was nice, though cold, and it did have a radiator. I was on a higher floor, so the pub below didn’t bother me, but street noise made sleeping a bit difficult. That’s not the hotel’s fault. On the plus side, it’s right by the green line Luas in the city center, with good food and shops nearby. I’d recommend it for a short stay, with the noise in mind.

I wish I could review the hotel itself, but I never got to stay. We booked more than a month ahead, then two days before the booking they asked us to update our card details. We did, and ten minutes later they emailed to say the booking was cancelled. We’d chosen to pay at the property, so the cancellation made no sense. It was ridiculous to lose the room without any reason.

We checked out just 20 minutes after arriving. The room smelled awful, and there were hairs and stains on the bed. The old floorboards creaked, and the place smelled of damp dog and old people. I was itchy in the room and pretty sure fleas were jumping around. When I asked the woman at the desk to change rooms, she said none were available. The view was wires, rubbish and a bottle of Fabreeze. The hotel looked nothing like the advertised pictures. Stay away, it was disgusting.
