The walks and views were wonderful, and the meal we had tasted good, but the restaurant service was appalling even though it wasn’t busy. We had booked The Glendalough Hotel as the final stop on our Ireland tour, hoping for a little treat after some great Airbnb stays. From outside, it looked lovely, but our twin room was a huge letdown, like a hostel from the 1980s. We asked to move, but there were no other rooms. The tiny room looked nothing like the photos on the website: it had two singles pushed together under one bottom sheet, making it effectively a double. Housekeeping gave us two single sheets, and we moved the beds as far apart as we could. They could make this place a real goldmine if they paid attention to all the rooms, not only the ones featured online.

The monastic city is right outside, and being able to visit when it wasn’t packed with tourists was a real treat. Casey’s dinner was good, especially the beef bourguignon, and they accommodated my vegan friend at both dinner and breakfast. We both had a lovely stay, and the staff were pleasant, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was generous and delicious, and our room was comfortable, clean and had an amazing view. I’d worried a little because the reviews were so mixed, but I’m glad we booked. It’s definitely an older building, so anyone looking for modern luxury might be disappointed. For the price, though, I thought it was a great place, and the location can’t be beat. I’d gladly return.

The buffet breakfast was part of the room price, with both hot and cold choices. There’s a restaurant and pub on site, and I enjoyed the one meal I had there. The service was warm, and my room and bed were comfortable. Lovely hotel; I’d stay again.

The staff were polite and attentive, and service was good, probably helped by how quiet the restaurant was at the time. But the food was extremely disappointing. I ordered the €22 fish and chips, and the fish smelled off and had a soft, gooey texture, almost mashed inside. It seemed undercooked. The thick batter made the serving look bigger than it was, with very little fish in it. For that price I expected a fresh, properly cooked meal and much better quality. It was one of the worst restaurant meals I’ve had in a long time. A word of caution to other customers: choose carefully.

This place feels like it belongs in its surroundings. After long walks, misty mornings and tired legs, coming back to The Glendalough Hotel was a welcome chance to slow down. It’s peaceful, the rooms are comfortable and inviting, and the whole stay has an easy, unhurried feel. The reception team were especially kind and thoughtful, making us feel welcome without rushing us. It’s well placed for exploring Glendalough, but quiet enough to let the day settle when you return. A calm base in a wild, beautiful place. I’d gladly come back 🤍
