Butler House

Butler House is right beside Kilkenny castle, in the middle of town, and is actually a dower house of the castle. Our family of five used two rooms, both full of character and beautifully decorated. They were rigorously clean, with quality furnishings, toiletries, and linens. The guest books explaining the historical figures and the surroundings were a lovely touch. Breakfast came in a sitting room that was just as beautifully appointed as the bedrooms. Freda at the front desk welcomed us with smiles and lovely Irish humour, which made for a brilliant start to our stay. The place is even better in person than in my photos or the ones I’d seen online. We were wowed.

The garden and location were highlights, with only a few minutes’ walk through to the castle and town centre. There’s complimentary private parking, too. The rooms felt elegant and cosy, with everything we needed, and breakfast with table service was fantastic. The staff were incredibly welcoming, especially Wendy and Patrica. A five-star experience, and we’re already planning to come back. Thank you!

The gardens are a real treat in every season, and I love walking around them with a coffee. The coffee is lovely, too. Butler House and Gardens is right in the heart of Kilkenny, with parking available and an easy walk to High Street, Kilkenny Castle, and the Design Centre. I’ve visited many times for weddings and professional meetings with colleagues. Each time, it’s been welcoming and well run, with consistently excellent customer service and well-maintained facilities.

Everyone on staff was helpful and especially kind to our five-year-old, who felt right at home. When we had to leave early on our last morning, they had a takeaway breakfast ready at checkout. Breakfast was very good, too. Our superior family room was spacious and comfortable, with a spectacular view of the gardens and castle. The hotel was very clean, though the carpets have some discoloration that didn’t make the place seem dirty. We barely saw other guests, so it was peaceful, and nights were quiet. Private lot parking was included. The hotel has a historic feel alongside grand modern updates, and sits in the middle of the action in Kilkenny. We felt we got what we paid for, and you can walk to just about anything you might need or want to do. Highly recommend.
