Ahernes Townhouse & Seafood Bar

The chowder was rich and packed with fish, highly recommended. Our takeaway dinner was hot, fresh, and served in generous portions. The service was brilliant, and calling ahead to set a collection time was easy. A lovely treat for older people who can’t get out.

I’ve eaten there plenty of times, but after this visit I won’t be going back. We had booked for three and had a 14-week-old baby who was staying in a car seat. At the door, the waiter, who I know from the previous owner’s staff, was really ignorant about it. I was ready to leave, but the barman told us to take our time and not to worry, so we went to the table. It turned out to be set for two, and they tried to squeeze us in. We got up again and explained why we were leaving, mainly because of the waiter’s attitude rather than the table. He just told us to go. If the new owners want to build a good reputation, they should teach him some manners or replace him. We went to clancys instead and had lovely food in a much better atmosphere. This is the first review I’ve ever written, and it’s not one I wanted to make.

The owners clearly love what they do, and it comes through in the easy, old-school way everything is handled. Our room was large and clean, there’s a car park round the back, and Berties is a great pub two doors down. We had a lovely stay, with very friendly service, superb breakfast, and amazing seafood.

The restaurant was lively with conversation and laughter, and the whole place felt spotless and welcoming. The food was beautiful, and every staff member gave excellent service. I’m coeliac and lactose intolerant, but they had no trouble catering for me, which is rare. David, Gaye, and Anne deserve credit for the care they put into every detail. We’ll be back, and I highly recommend it.
