Captain Halpin'S Hostel

I've eaten here many times over the last few years and had mixed experiences. This morning's celebratory family breakfast was a real disappointment for our group, both the meals and the service. As a vegetarian, I was excited to order avocado and feta toast, but for €12 I got half a slice of bread, only about three bites. Even a whole slice would've been small. The taste was mediocre at best, and the tomatoes were badly cooked. Service was very slow, especially since the restaurant was quiet and these were breakfast orders.

Breakfast came with a beautiful river view, and they adapted the menu to make my food gluten free. The food was delicious, parking on the street was easy, and the stay felt well worth the money. The rooms were cozy, comfortable, very clean and quiet, and right in the centre. The WiFi wasn't working; we asked about it, but it never got fixed. Thanks for a lovely stay!

As a lifelong vegetarian who's now vegan, I was really impressed that the chef made me a wonderful meal. The staff were first class, and the restaurant had a lovely atmosphere. I sat by a window overlooking the river and almost felt as if I were on a boat. They made me feel very welcome, and I'd happily return.

We came back after a lovely meal here a couple of years ago, but left very disappointed. The starter was good, but the burgers took more than half an hour and arrived warm. For the price, neither the ingredients nor the flavour were great. We had to ask for water and napkins when the mains arrived, as nobody checked on us or asked if we needed anything. It was busy, but we noticed tables with “local” people were regularly served before us, even when they sat down later.
