Dunbur Lodge

The location is beautiful, with a fabulous cliff walk behind the property, and our visit to wicklow was amazing. The accommodation, though, was a letdown. The room smelled, the shower never got hot, and the decor was shabby. Breakfast was only toast or cereal. The bedroom information said to ask for a hairdryer, but they didn't have one when we asked. The walls are very thin. It was awful apart from the setting.

We couldn't wait to check out, after waking from nightmares as early as 3am. The upstairs windows open very wide without restrictors, which didn't feel safe for children. The room was tiny, and the shower room so cramped we had to squeeze in to bathe. The old, dirty wardrobe had no rails or hangers, so we couldn't use it. Worn, faded carpets had cigarette burns, and smoke filled the room and got into all our clothes. The smell stayed on them after we left. It was expensive for no value at all.

The bed was disgusting. The mattress had a big hole that I nearly fell through when I sat down, and there was no protector. The sheet was so thin that every stain showed through. The covers were filthy and torn, and broken nails stuck out from the headboard. The carpet was so dirty I didn't want to take my shoes off. The bathroom also needs a new sink pedestal and shower tray. Do not stay here.

For €50 a night, this is a basic B&B, and you get what you pay for. The room was clean and dry, with a bed, tea and coffee, a TV, and an ensuite, plus a sea view if your eyesight is good. It's definitely dated, but it had what I needed and I can't complain. The continental breakfast was filling, with a limited spread but as much as you wanted. I can imagine it was lovely in its better days.
