Desert Shade Eco Lodge

The view is incredible, the lobby is beautiful, and the facilities are clean. But it was disappointing to feel unwelcome, especially when the service was the rudest we’ve ever had at a hotel. We got there before check-in and the owner coldly told us to come back later and not walk around the property. At most hotels, arriving early just means the room isn’t ready, while guests can still hang out. We came back at check-in time, but the process took a long time. The owner rudely insisted on seeing a physical passport and an Israel tourist permit, the blue ticket, to avoid Israeli resident tax fees. The booking process hadn’t said anywhere that these documents were required to check in. Eventually a passport photo was accepted, and luckily one person in our group had their blue paper, but the whole interaction felt rude and unwelcoming. A friend was with our group, and we hoped she could join us for dinner at an outdoor picnic table. The owner angrily said she couldn’t be anywhere on the property and had to leave, or pay as a full overnight guest. The policy is very strict, and it was explained to us rudely. We also didn’t have access to some of the accommodations and amenities we thought we would. Only one person was working in the evening, and general supplies were limited. There was a shared kitchen, so we bought groceries, but no fridges. Keep that in mind, because you’ll need to bring your own supplies or buy or rent them there. Breakfast wasn’t what we expected. Still, the view and being in Mitzpe Ramon were great. The facility itself is nice, but feeling unwelcome made the stay unfortunate.

A simple, comfortable dorm, and the best place I slept in Israel by far. The desert view from the lodge is stunning, and the hospitality was so warm I felt at home. I loved the place. It has just what accommodation in such a fantastic park needs.

Ask whether you can join the jeep tour through the Makhtesh. It’s really worth it. The stay has a camping feel, just with the added comfort of a solid roof. The lobby is lovely and authentic, a nice place to relax, drink wine, and enjoy yourself. The staff were so friendly and made our stay unforgettable.

The cabin was basic, but it suited me. Don’t expect a fancy room. I really liked the breakfast, and the location was good, with an easy walk down to the crater. The hosts were kind and clearly explained how everything works. I’d definitely go back.
