Hotel Shikhar & Restaurant

The staff were consistently courteous and helpful, and the restaurant on the fifth floor served decent food with good service. Some dishes felt overpriced, though there aren't many good restaurant options nearby. We spent four nights here, and the location on Mall Road made walking to the old markets easy. That convenience comes with heavy traffic, pollution, and noise. Parking is very limited and usually full, so getting the car in and out takes real skill, even though the parking attendants are helpful. The hotel's website shows a grand view from the valley side, but guests don't get to see that view. You enter through a cramped parking area, and the building is a jumble of six floors with rooms, a banquet hall, drivers' rooms, a large open party floor, and an SBI branch or local office. From inside, the view is of old, dirty, run-down buildings, though the valley view itself is good. Our room was a decent size with basic amenities. The bathroom was small, with no separate shower area. The heater shone brightly all night and disturbed our sleep; from the second night, they managed to get us an old, dusty, single-rod heater instead. Wi-Fi was patchy and slow. Stay here if basic amenities and Mall Road noise are fine with you and you want to explore Almora's old markets. For more comfort and quiet, look elsewhere away from Mall Road.

I enjoyed the lovely Almora views and an early morning sunrise. The stay was a mixed experience, though: the rooms were good, but room service needs work, and the rooms could use an extra heater on cold days.

There was no water supply on the second floor, and every room there seemed to have a water problem. The hotel couldn't provide this basic amenity, and it's something management needs to fix. The rooms were very dirty, with stained walls and not even a basic whitewash. Investing in the hotel once isn't enough, it needs ongoing maintenance. Our experience was extremely bad, and I strongly recommend that no one stay here.
