For a low-cost stay in the heart of the old city where you can keep to yourself, this place works well. The rooms are set up for resting, and at barely $10 a night, you get very basic comfort. The family who runs it is relaxed, friendly, and welcoming, so you can enjoy Bikaner on a budget.

The rooftop terrace is small, but it’s a private, cozy spot to unwind, and the rooms, though basic, were very clean. I also loved when the friendly pet rabbit, kuku, came to visit our room; he’s used to being petted and probably won’t nip or bite. The house feels homey, with murals painted by past guests and old-fashioned bits and pieces like an embroidered vest and a record player. We were picked up from the train station and warmly welcomed by Gouri and his wife Tara, with tasty tea and a thorough rundown of things to do in Bikaner. Gouri knows a lot about guiding visitors and can help organize your stay. He also does charity work when he can and may invite you along if that interests you. I really enjoyed my time here and would recommend it to anyone after charming budget accommodation.

The old-city character, wall art, and time with Gouri’s family made this a place where I could relax, connect, and even heal if needed. Shanti is the name of this Guest House. Gauri did several thoughtful, kind things that honestly helped restore my faith in my trip to India. He knows a lot of people, and I can’t think of anyone better to show me around town. He even took me to the doctor. I’d recommend this family guesthouse to friends and family.

We were only at Shanti House in Bikaner, Rajasthan for one night, my husband, our 16 year old daughter, and me. The host family was so gentle, friendly, and welcoming. They listened to what we liked and how much time we had, then suggested things that fit. Their walk around the old city is worth trying, with intricately decorated havelis to see and delicious street food to taste. They felt genuine, and are some of the nicest people we’ve met so far.

I used this lovely, cool house as my base for seeing Bikaner, and the family made it feel warm. I arrived with no idea what the city had to offer, but they explained things, made suggestions, and even took me to places. Such a nice atmosphere.
