One small suggestion: some of the toilet fittings are very old and could be replaced to make the place more comfortable. The hosts were great, though, and the rooms were clean and cozy. We enjoyed the peaceful greenery, sunset views from the garden, and the evening bonfire, which was a nice chance to meet other travelers. It’s a lovely quiet spot with a warm community feel for backpackers.

The Birdhouse Hostel had a cozy, homelike feel, and Karan was a warm, welcoming host. We booked the private room twice during our stay, and it was clean and comfortable both times. There’s hot water and a nice collection of books to read. Lots of backpackers were around, doing yoga on the lawn and sharing stories. A tip: mention that you’re staying here to get 10% off your bill at their cafe, which is another lovely place they own.

I’m grateful this was my first solo travel stay. Sanjeev, my macha, is an amazing host. I had a lovely time with the people I met, jamming to music, painting, and playing cards in the evenings. The hostel is quiet, pleasant, and full of calming bird sounds. You can just sit outside and do nothing. I took an auto to get there for a fixed ₹150. Special mention to Prajwal and Vidhya, kind souls who helped make the place beautiful.

The people made my four days at The Birdhouse Hostel, Coonoor especially memorable. Prajwal, the owner, is creative, approachable, and clearly cares about making guests feel at home. Sharon, the volunteer, was attentive and always ready to help with a smile. The cleaning and cooking staff kept things immaculate and served warm, homely food. The easygoing guests quickly became friends over books, board games, and long conversations. One night’s bonfire under the stars, with the garden lights glowing and stories from around the world, is the kind of evening I’ll remember for years. The garden itself is a highlight, with flowers, plenty of seating corners, mountain air, and bright sunshine. The hostel is quiet and away from the town center, but Green Valley viewpoint is only a short hike away, with sunrises over the green estates of Homedales Tea. In late January the weather was crisp, and it was peaceful without crowds. Inside, the place feels warm and rustic, with artistic touches, hand-drawn wall art, playful illustrated guides, and a useful trifold guide to local spots. The rooms open onto the shared common area, so there’s always a gentle buzz of conversation, laughter, or djembe drumming. Bicycles are available for exploring, and the atmosphere makes room for both adventure and downtime. The bunks were comfortable with warm blankets and soft pillows; shared bathrooms were clean and had reliable hot water for chilly mornings. I left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already wanting to return. This feels more like a creative, welcoming home than a typical backpacker hostel, and it went beyond my high expectations.

The hostel felt like a second home, with fair rules that kept things calm and respectful. Volunteer Sharon deserves special mention for being supportive, approachable, and disciplined. She cared about our well-being and was ready to help whenever we needed it. The rooms were comfortable, clean, and well maintained, and the atmosphere was peaceful and safe for students. I’d highly recommend it as a comfortable, well-managed place to stay.
