I stayed at New Vaishali Hotel, Darjeeling, from 19th May to 21st May. On the morning of the 21st, I found that rats had got into the room and eaten the chocolates worth ₹500 that I'd bought from Glenary's. At over ₹2,000 a night, finding rats in the room is unacceptable. The staff barely seemed concerned when I reported it. They took no meaningful action and offered no compensation for what I lost. It left me worried about the hotel's hygiene and maintenance, and made for one of the most unpleasant stays I've had. I wouldn't recommend it unless cleanliness, pest control, and customer service improve significantly.

I've worked with this hotel as a travel agent for five years. It's very good, the staff are very good, and the food is very good too. My guests haven't had complaints. It's right by the market, about a three-minute walk.
