Jain Group Hotel Royal Residency Hotel

The location is the one real plus, about 250 meters from MG Market. I stayed for two days, and the rest was disappointing for a three-star hotel. The bed and pillows were old, hard, and uncomfortable. On checkout at around 4:30 AM, there was no water from the bathroom taps; the caretaker was unresponsive and offered no help or alternative, so we had to manage ourselves. Water bottles were another issue: on day one we got an opened bottle, and staff said they refill used bottles with RO water, which was concerning. On the second day none was provided, and we were told a requested bottle would cost extra. Aside from the convenient location, the service and basic amenities weren’t what I’d expect at this rating.

We stayed here twice on our Gangtok trip, first in a suite, then in a standard room after North Sikkim. The rooms themselves were spacious, clean, and well maintained, with large, nicely designed bathrooms. It’s within walking distance of MG Road, and the underground passage straight to MG Road is especially handy when the uphill walking gets tiring. But the price didn’t feel justified by the service and upkeep. The first stay had several snags. Housekeeping cleaned the suite but left my used morning tea cup untouched, and the makeup table light stopped working on the first night. At early checkout, nobody was available at reception to help, as the staff seemed to be asleep. Food service was odd too: chow mein arrived without forks or cutlery, and after several follow-ups we waited almost another hour for forks. The food was average, the price felt high for what we got, and responses were slow and uncoordinated. The standard room was more frustrating. The shower didn’t work at all, and the attendant said he didn’t know why, so we had to bathe with buckets. The lights kept tripping, and the Wi-Fi was extremely poor, which makes the hotel a bad choice if you need internet for work or travel planning. Good rooms and location, but the maintenance and staff response need major improvement.

Staff were polite and helpful throughout our four nights and five days. Taking the shortcut, M.G. Marg was only about a 4 to 5-minute walk away. The best part was being able to see Kanchenjunga🏔️ from our room, even while sitting on the bed. 😌🙃🫰

Clean but small rooms, with polite, customer-friendly staff. Great spot right beside MG road.
