We were reluctant to leave after breakfast, but had to head to Bagdogra for our flight. The sunrise the guard woke us for was magical, and we sat in the early sun with coffee and soft devotional music playing on the big Bluetooth speaker. Breakfast was exactly what we ordered, especially the fluffy idlis with hot sambhar and the stuffed parathas. The night before, dinner offered Chinese and North Indian dishes, and we finished with a tall glass of tutti frutti before falling into bed, worn out from eating. We’d already managed three meals in just a few hours: a homely Odiya lunch after Mr. Uma Shankar welcomed us, high tea with onion pakoras, and bonfire snacks of chicken and veg momos, peanut masala, and salt and pepper corn. With low occupancy, Chef Kishore and team tailored the food to our choices. The hotel sits on an outcrop in the Jungpana tea estate, open on three sides to wide hill views and, when clouds allow, the sunrise. Our huge room had a four poster bed, a fireplace they lit for us at bedtime, a Jacuzzi, rain shower, sofa, roomy dressing area for our two large and two small suitcases, coffee bar, and a big verandah with two armchairs where we watched the sunset. There are 12 rooms/suites, a heated pool, separate gazebos, and a large garden where we had drinks, snacks, and a bonfire. We also played table tennis and pool to burn off some of all that food. An unforgettable stay. Kudos to the team.

The staff greeted us warmly and were polite and well behaved. The place and its surroundings feel like heaven, and the coffee was so good I promised myself I’d come back for another mug that feels like a hug. Jungpana is in a quiet part of North Bengal. The roads are good, though very steep and narrow.

Time seems to stand still in the warmth of nature here. The relaxed corners around the property add to its unusual feel, as do the rooms. It’s a secluded, striking property belonging to his highness Jung Bahadur Rana of Nepal, set on a low ridge within the Jungpana tea estate with views toward the Kurseong hills. It’s only a 4 km detour from Mahanadi.

The pool feels more symbolic at this altitude and in this temperature, but the atmosphere is luxurious and the setting is peaceful, with beautiful views in every direction. There are only about 12-14 rooms, priced at 50K+ with GST, so it’s a premium stay where you feel especially welcome. Walk through the plain-looking entrance and the size and beauty behind it are a real surprise, like finding a little paradise. Everything is carefully laid out, and it’s a distinctive place to relax and recharge. If you want privacy and comfort for an unusual retreat, it’s worth the time.

Mayfair Manor Jungpana is a lovely place to find some peace and quiet. Nature speaks louder here, and you can take plenty of photos and videos to remember it by. I’d suggest setting aside an extra day, or at least spending a night. It’s one of the calmest, most beautiful places to stay in North Bengal, with outstanding service and hospitality. The staff are humble and kind, and their simple, caring manner brings to mind the old days when people seemed so considerate.
