Hills Tale Backpackers Hostel

I originally booked two nights and ended up staying three more because I liked Hills Tale so much. Five nights cost me 4k, which felt very reasonable. Food isn’t included, but it still felt like a win-win. There’s a real Himalayan mountain feel here, unlike the commercial hotel chains. Nischal, a young man in his thirties, welcomed me and made me comfortable. Solo travellers would be wise to book a dorm bed, while families can choose a reasonably priced private room. Just pack your backpack and head to Kalimpong, Nischal will welcome you with open arms.

I spent two days at Hills Tale and had a wonderful time. I met some really nice people, enjoyed the terrace view, and loved hanging out with the cute pet cats. The place feels homely, with clean, comfortable rooms and delicious food. The hosts were warm and always ready to help. It’s also easy to reach and close to everything. Highly recommend it for a cozy, welcoming stay!

The rooftop is a lovely place to spend time, with a hammock chair for sunbathing, an open gym, plenty of space for sitting around a bonfire, and a beautiful view over the city and hills. Get up early and you might catch the sunrise. Inside, the common room is spacious and nicely designed, with good music that makes it easy to stay for hours. The dorms are clean and roomy, with lockers, plenty of charging points, reading lights, and storage boxes. Washrooms and toilets are in separate units, clean and well ventilated, and toiletries are provided. For all these facilities, the price feels like a steal. Hills Tale Backpackers Hostel is in a convenient spot between Dambar Chowk, Kalimpong, and quiet nature walks. It’s peaceful and cozy, with a home-like feel suited to longer stays. All three hosts are friendly, know Kalimpong well, and offer affordable day tour strolls. Home-cooked lunch and dinner can be ordered in advance.

Casper and Cosmos, the two relaxed, adorable cats, really added to the homely feel. I also loved the inhouse scooty tour they curated, a fun way to explore the area. The hosts, Nischal, Sandup and Ashis, were so welcoming and know Kalimpong well, including its cafés and hidden viewpoints. The location is convenient and close to everything, yet peaceful enough to relax. The place is beautiful and cozy, and felt like home as soon as I arrived. My stay went beyond expectations, and I’d absolutely come back.
