The biggest problem was the New Year's Party, which was mandatory to pay for when booking even if we didn’t want to attend. That should have been a personal choice. It was a disaster. The small balcony-like area could barely hold everyone, the crowd was hard to manage, and the service was practically nonexistent. Some of the far tables were ignored, so we had to move to get food. The organisers even ran out of proper plates and used paper plates and cups for appetizers and drinks, which was awful for a 4-star hotel that runs this party every year. The bar kept running out of some drinks, and though the event started at 8 p.m., proper food didn’t arrive until 10 p.m. I was starving. The DJ blasted the speakers, and the Bollywood-focused host and music left some South Indians feeling a bit left out. The food was mediocre, aside from good appetizers. I hated the party. Next time they should organise it better instead of charging guests who just want to stay. We were in room 401 for 6 days and 6 nights. It was small for us with an extra bed, but still comfortable, and the TV had good channel subscriptions. Special lights opposite our large window changed colours at night and shone through the curtains, sometimes disturbing our sleep. Getting through to reception to book ahead was difficult because they sometimes didn’t answer, though that improved during our stay. The hotel itself was fine, but service was probably the worst I’ve had. The location was very convenient, close to the railway and most areas, so connectivity was amazing.

All buses pass through here, so getting to nearby areas is easy. The location’s good, the food was nice, and the service was excellent. Staff didn’t disturb or interfere with us.

On 28 sept and 29 sept, the hotel was occupied by students from Indian Public School, bangalore. While they were there, breakfast was very limited: poha, upma, idli, sambar and puri sabji. There was no dosa, bread, butter, jam, cupcakes, juice, milkshake or sweets. When I asked for dosa, the old guy chef rudely said he wouldn’t serve it. We had to eat the poor-quality food, and the plates weren’t clean. The breakfast staff seemed to ignore us, apparently thinking we were part of the student group, and looked like interns. As soon as the students checked out on 29th, all the missing breakfast items were served. I paid a heavy charge for a room with breakfast and lost out for two days. The minibar had one refrigerated bottle that wasn’t listed on the room tariff card. On checkout day, reception showed us an inflated bill for refrigerated water bottles and looked at us strangely, as if we’d stolen something. They didn’t greet us when we left because we wouldn’t pay their fraudulent bill for one water bottle. Since when is water a bar item? Staff had also been coming into our room while we were away without our consent for two days, and they didn’t even ask me to sign to confirm whether we drank water. The bedsheets had stains, and the building felt as old as a government office. They mistreated us for two days and treated us differently after we refused the water charge. No one apologized for their behavior or poor service. We’ll never visit again.

I expected more from Goldfinch, since I paid ₹7,000 and thought it was one of Mangalore’s best hotels. The room itself was decent, but the bathroom smelled like a gutter. There was confusion in the lobby when they were assigning my pre-booked room, and the hallway to the rooms wasn’t furnished. At half the price, you can find better hotels in Mangalore with much better ambience and service. This place needs a lot of improvement.

Both arrival and checkout came with the same lack of courtesy from the front desk. They were unhelpful and slow, and sometimes plainly rude. Even simple questions about the room, amenities, or bill tariff got indifferent or curt replies. My recent stay was unacceptable, and I rarely write negative reviews.
