Basti - A Backpackers Hostel

The location is probably the strongest point, and breakfast being included is appreciated. For the price, the hostel is okay, but my stay didn’t feel very welcoming. Most staff weren’t warm or helpful; the one exception was the polite, supportive person at reception. I had hygiene concerns about the food. The chapatis had a noticeable sour taste, and I saw old rice being brought out, so it looked reused. Glasses also seemed to be shared by several people without proper washing. The room was disappointing too. Air circulation was poor and there was an unpleasant smell. The floor in my room was damaged, and the walls were in below-average condition, as the pictures show. Cleanliness, hygiene, and room upkeep need serious attention.

Mohammed at the front desk is so helpful and polite, and anyone would enjoy chatting with him. My stay was really comfortable, and I’d tell people not to hesitate about visiting.

The place had a relaxed, cozy feel, and they were able to fit me in when I arrived a day early. The green surroundings also felt fairly safe. My bed was too short, as is often the case for me in India, but it didn’t hurt like it sometimes does, and the blanket was long enough. That was a highlight. I chose this hostel partly because it used to offer a cooked breakfast, but they’ve stopped serving it. Now there’s a cockroach, a plate of fruit, untoasted white bread for PB&J, and two kinds of unhealthy cereal. The tea is delicious. With a few small changes, this could be a great hostel.

When I come to Mumbai, I prefer Locomo express. The staff are supportive, and it’s easy to get to fancy restaurants and other places. I also like being able to stay at the property until 10 pm after checkout, which is handy if my flight is late in the evening or at night. I’d recommend it.
