We came to Samode in 2017 for a homestay and a bit of cultural experience. We ended up feeling like part of the family and making friends for life. I hope we can return and spend more time with them someday. Until then, we'll keep messaging and following each other's updates on social media. If you're hoping to connect with a lovely Indian family, this is the place. And Ram, we love you!

Finding Apno Heritage in a small village just outside the Samode Palace area, about 40 km from Jaipur, was a lucky result of our wandering. The whole house is covered in Rajasthani miniature paintings, from the walls up to the ceiling, and it feels like stepping into a little palace. The artist had once worked at Gwalior palace for the late Mr Madhavrao Scindhia, painting miniatures. He, his wife, and son have decorated the homestay with their work. Though we arrived very late, he made us simple dal and rice for lunch and showed us all his paintings. It was sad to hear that, despite all his skill, the family was struggling to make ends meet. They asked us for ideas to help bring attention to the artist and homestay, and we said we'd try to do our part.
