Moonlit Sands

A budget-friendly stay that felt like good value. The location was ideal and convenient for exploring, and the rooms were spacious and clean. Service was acceptable, though there were a few small inconveniences. Overall, I had a pleasant visit.

Moonlit Sands has no beach, but the bay view, full of colourful boats, is beautiful. It’s one of only 2-3 nice places left on Havelock island for an independent budget traveler. The island seems to have shifted toward mass Indian tourism, especially short package trips to overpriced “beach resorts” that often lack a proper beach, since many developed west-coast beaches are rocky and too shallow for swimming. All the rooms have verandas and sit in a lush, well-kept area surrounded by trees. The place is super clean, and the staff are friendly and helpful. It’s about 500 meters from the jetty and bus stand, which is handy. Radhanagar, the only truly beautiful beach that’s easy to reach, is best accessed by bus for just 20 rupees. I recommend Moonlit Sands to independent travelers.

The location was the only good thing about this hotel. The rooms were far below standard, with cockroaches crawling around the bathroom. Service was no better: the staff seemed forced to work and unwilling to make an effort. When I asked for something, they’d just say, “bahar se le aaiye.” I might have given it at least two stars if I’d been alone, but being there with my family made the stay frustrating, so I’m giving one.

I stayed there in Dec. It’s a resort with 14-20 rooms in a very good location, but the room and toilet cleanliness was only average. Food and service were average too.
