Hotel Grand Continental

I rarely write reviews, and especially not long ones, but as a solo woman traveling in India for the first time, I was stressed about what I might run into. I found kindness, comfort, great hospitality, and delicious food here. Thank you so much. I arrived late at Varanasi Railway Junction after delays on the way from Nepal, so I’d checked the property on streetview Googlemaps first. It’s distinctive and easy to find even in low light. The location is perfect, about a 7-minute walk from transport options. Check-in was quick and professional, the staff spoke excellent English, and the hotel is very well staffed. Room requests were handled quickly, discrepancies were checked by phone, and my online requests while traveling were answered promptly. I’m picky and had only booked two nights in case the place was horrible, but once I settled in, I felt lucky and immediately wanted to extend my stay. The staff were the best part. They helped me find the right socket adaptor quickly and cheaply. At breakfast they remembered my preferences and made a large, healthy meal with garnishes cooked just how I asked. Don’t be put off by an empty restaurant, the food is inexpensive and good quality, they just don’t seem to advertise online. They also offered advice about Varanasi while being attentive, kind, and professional, but still giving me space. The internet is fast throughout the hotel. My room was laid out like a Premier Inn, though that might vary by room. It had a working TV and AC, big windows, and thick curtains. It was clean, although there were a few stains on the towel. The bath towel was thick and clearly well washed and dried, so I didn’t mind. It’s a classy place and still very cheap, from someone who has spent years staying in hotels and Airbnbs.
