Akranes HI Hostel

I booked a private room, and it was clean and comfortable, with its own bathroom and shower. The bed was great, and checking myself in was quick and easy. Street parking was also simple with a rental car. The shared area felt cramped around the tables and chairs, and there weren’t as many dishes or appliances as I’d found at other hostels on my trip. There’s almost nowhere to eat nearby, which was disappointing. It works well as a stop outside Reykjavik while heading out on a trip, but bring groceries or eat first.

We slept well without hearing people in the other rooms or neighbors. Our room was roomy, comfortable, and nicely furnished. The shared kitchen and room could have been cleaner. The oven was so dirty that it smoked and set off the fire alarm when we used it. We stayed one night and didn’t see any staff, and the phone by the entrance wasn’t working either.

The noise carries straight through the walls. People were still talking loudly and having fun in the living room at midnight. This was the worst place I’ve stayed in Iceland, and I wouldn’t book it again if I had the choice.

I wouldn’t recommend this at all. The reservation couldn’t be changed, and it was very expensive. When I ran into a problem, the hostel wouldn’t refund me or offer any solution, saying it would close on 25 September. It was 19 June, and I couldn’t travel two months later just to use the booking. Really, really bad.
