Lava Apartments

The main issue was the noise. We could hear doors opening and closing, and our upstairs neighbours talking and using the bathroom. If you're a light sleeper, this probably isn't the hotel for you. I was exhausted, so it didn't wake me, but my wife had more trouble falling asleep. I'd still stay again, despite those issues. Access was very easy even without a front desk: they email you a code for the main entrance and your room. The building doesn't look great from the outside, but the interior had been newly renovated. Our room was large, with a private patio, table, and two chairs, and the blackout blinds worked well. Parking can be awkward too. The hotel lot is free only from 4 pm to 10 am, so outside those hours you'll need to park farther away and walk.

The staff were really friendly and even helped when my car battery died. The room was clean and nicely designed, and the location was amazing, within walking distance of everywhere in the city. I definitely recommend it.

For a budget hotel, it was decent and had the basics for an overnight stay: a reasonable room, private shower, and free parking. I wouldn't go back, though. The room was a bit cramped and the sliding bathroom door didn't block sound well. The decor felt basic and mismatched, so it wasn't cosy, and some of the exterior was in disrepair. It wasn't very pleasant to look at.

At €176 a night, this room was ridiculously bad. On my side, the ceiling was about a meter high, and there were two beds crammed into what felt like a wardrobe. It was warm weather in August. Rain fell overnight, but we couldn't open the skylight because it was directly above the bed and water would come in. With no usable ventilation, the room was far too hot. I travel all over the world, and this is the worst room I've ever stayed in. It isn't fit for purpose and surely doesn't meet safety code. Iceland is amazing, this was my fifth trip, and I loved Akureyri on my second visit. I'll be back next year, but not to the Lava Apartments 👎🏻.
