Eyjafjallajokull - Farmhouse

The 2010 activity started with clusters of small earthquakes in January, which grew stronger and more frequent by early March. Lava then emerged through a 500-metre vent at Fimmvörduháls Pass, and in April new fissures opened beneath the summit crater. Ice melted quickly, sending mud and floodwater into local rivers, damaging roads and farmland. Ash rose nearly 11 km and drifted toward northern Europe, leading many countries to close their airspace for several days. The eruption also disrupted flights across Europe and caused flooding from glacial meltwater. Eyjafjallajökull lies in southern Iceland's East Volcanic Zone, beneath the glacier that shares its name. It reaches 5,466 feet (1,666 metres) and covers about 40 square miles (100 square km). Once connected to Mýrdalsjökull, it is now separated from it by the ice-free Fimmvörduháls Pass. The name comes from an Icelandic phrase meaning “the island’s mountain glacier.” Records describe eruptions in 920, 1612 or 1613, and 1821-23. The last continued intermittently for nearly 14 months. In all three cases, Katla, about 15.5 miles (25 km) to the east, erupted at the same time or shortly afterward.
