We slept incredibly well in our small but charming room, which had a nice sea view from the second floor. The bathroom was shared, but since we were the only guests, we had plenty of privacy. Our room was in the smaller of the hotel's two buildings. The main building has most of the rooms, the dining area, and some loungers outside. Hotel Flatey sits on the coast beside a little bay, with a garden that reaches right down to the water. The island itself is stunning, dotted with small houses and groups of sheep, and there are few people staying there in summer. It's about a pleasant 10-minute walk from the port. Sandra kindly drove over to pick up our luggage while we walked. She also gave us plenty of useful ideas for exploring the island, which is beautiful. We had dinner at the hotel in a large, welcoming dining room and really enjoyed it. The hotel had just reopened for the season, so it was still quiet and the live music program hadn't begun yet. The hotel has cozy rooms and a place to have breakfast, aperitifs, and meals, and it's the only real accommodation option on the island. You can wander around the island at any time, morning or after dinner, and it's a lovely way to relax and switch off. The location and the hotel made for an amazing stay.

You can only get to this remote hotel by ferry, but it's right in the middle of Breiðafjörður on beautiful Flatey. The food and drinks were great, and the service was top class. They rent kayaks too, and it's a lovely spot for anyone who enjoys birds and animals.

The staff were so kind and attentive. One of the waitresses shared lovely descriptions and tips that already have us planning another Iceland trip, and she made us “Flajitos,” a Flatey mojito with pickled rhubarb. We also got chatting with one of the chefs, who made incredible food, including mushroom soup from a recipe passed down by an Icelandic grandma. He kept us company while we waited for our ferry. We were the first guests of the season at Hotel Flatey and the only tourists staying overnight on the island. The quiet felt restorative. It was fascinating to wander around the tiny island and imagine what it was like in its heyday as a cultural epicenter, and what life is like now in the busy tourist season or in the middle of winter, when only two farmers apparently live there and don't care for each other. Our room had a view I can't really describe. With the windows open, when the wind allowed, the ocean waves lulled us to sleep. Bring an eye mask for the midnight sun. I recommend the suite in the second house. The bed was VERY soft, maybe too soft for people who like a firm mattress, but I think you're crazy, personally. There were two bathrooms in our building. With a full house, that could take some figuring out, though sharing facilities can also be a nice way to connect. One practical note: you can't drive your car onto the island. Buy the right ticket and arrange for the ferry staff to drive it off and park it on the other side. It'll be waiting when you arrive to continue your trip. Very slick.

I was tired, a little lost, and starving when I got to Flatey. I hurried to the island's only restaurant, where I was the only person there, which made me a bit stressed too. Then Lily came over to talk me through the menu and went well out of her way to make me comfortable. It felt like she'd been expecting me. She served me delicious food and wine, and was charming through the whole lunch. That turned my day around, and I really enjoyed the island afterward. Thanks, Lily. I imagine you welcome lots of people every day, and that kindness and care made a real difference.

It's a hotel in a unique setting, and I loved my first stay there. When our ferry reached the island, the hotel staff took care of transporting our luggage. My friend and I then walked to the hotel, which stands where the town's central square used to be, and arrived just in time for dinner. The shared rooms and bathrooms were comfortable and spotless, and the service was friendly. Dinner was excellent, and breakfast was really nice, though its presentation could be better. I hope to come back soon, and would definitely recommend both the hotel and a visit to Flatey.
