The aurora was stunning, but the service at Riverfront Lodge Hella was ugly and rude. As a hotel owner in Malaysia, I was appalled by how unprofessional and disrespectful the staff were. The website lists “Cookware/Kitchen utensils” as a kitchen amenity. We used the kitchen on our first night and left it spotless, but staff then rudely told us we couldn’t use it for dinner again. When we tried to cook, one staff member was aggressive, said the “common kitchen” was off limits, and even barred us from entering before 8:15 AM the next day, calling it a “rule.” If these restrictions apply, they should be posted clearly on the door or website instead of being used to berate guests. That same morning, we waited politely for breakfast to be prepared. I asked if my child could wash their hands in the kitchen sink and got a blunt, hostile “No.” The basin in our room was clogged, which made that response especially frustrating. Nature gave this country the magic of the Aurora, but the ugly service here spoiled that beauty. It’s a shame for Icelandic tourism to treat disciplined, paying customers with such disrespect. I will be escalating this matter to the Icelandic Tourism Board.

The common area was a lovely place to have a relaxed breakfast or get some work done online in the afternoon. Our room was clean, cozy and warm, with a beautiful river view. Everything felt well organized and thoughtfully arranged, and breakfast had a delicious range of choices. The hosts were warm and welcoming. They also went out of their way to help with a couple of unexpected travel problems, including transportation. We felt well looked after and would absolutely recommend Riverfront Lodge to anyone wanting a peaceful, comfortable stay in southern Iceland.

Such lovely hosts, the nicest I’ve ever met! It’s clean and comfortable, and the location is perfect. A great place to stay, and I’d definitely come back.

The bathroom is very basic and has no ventilation. After showering, the air gets noticeably humid, which is a pity. Still, it’s a really nice place with a great river view, friendly staff and a very good breakfast. The rooms are cozy, and I’d come back. We’ve stayed here twice.

The setting is stunning, right by a river with scenic views, and the Highlands are only a short drive away. Our room was cozy, we pushed the twin beds together, and the shower had good water pressure. It was an ideal base for relaxing and exploring the area. We were both in a bike race about a 10 minute drive away, along with quite a few other guests, and Riverfront Lodge worked perfectly before and after the event. The hosts were friendly and informative. We had an interesting chat about Icelandic culture over our last breakfast, but they never felt overbearing. They were also accommodating with our bikes, letting us use the decking to assemble and break them down for the bike boxes, and offering the hose if we needed to clean them. Breakfast was varied and a great start to the day. We picked up food at a local supermarket, and the shared kitchen had all the cooking utensils and seasonings we needed to make dinner.
