Snotra Hostel

The owners were really friendly, and the rooms were nice and clean. There are plenty of showers and toilets, so you won't be waiting long. The kitchen was above average, with induction plates, a first for me on my Iceland round-trip, plus a selection of free sauces. Check-in is available until 22:00, and checkout is at 10:00.

We came to see the last McDonald’s sold in Iceland, which they have on display, but the place was closed. A stranger told us it only opens for large groups and you have to call ahead. Snotra house? More like Snotopen house!

The staff were the friendliest I've come across in an Icelandic hostel. I loved the whole place. It has a retro, "old" interior done in a modern way, and you can have your own room or share with other guests for a bit less. The prices are affordable. The shared kitchen is large, with lots of new appliances and plenty of spices and other cooking bits. Each table even has its own toaster, handy for breakfast. You can put your food in the fridge and label it. I especially liked the free food basket, where you can leave what you don't need or take something for yourself. They also have a used gas basket for partially used gas bottles. I hadn't seen that anywhere else, and loved the idea of travellers sharing them for camping. There's warm coffee waiting in the kitchen in the morning after 7am. The doors have a nice locking system, and they say 'Welcome!' whenever you open them. A lovely place to stay while travelling through.

The mountain view from my room was a great bonus, and the place felt warm and cozy inside. I liked the music and how tidy everything was. It’s in a quiet spot, just a short drive from the main Route 1, and the price is very good for Iceland. I haven’t tried any other hostels in Iceland, but this is the best hostel I’ve stayed in anywhere. You can’t go wrong here, especially at this price. 10/10, highly recommend.
