The Highland Center Hrauneyjar

The burger was the best we had on our whole trip, including the vegan version. They serve the “cheaper” snacks until 6 pm. Breakfast was great too, with vegan options available. Rooms are small and minimalistic, but still cozy. Accommodation and dinner cost quite a bit, which makes sense given how remote the building is and the lack of competition. It’s a perfect home base for visiting the highland/Landmannalaugar.

We were a big group and booked 4 different types of rooms at Highland center. They were all well equipped and very clean, with fantastic views. Breakfast had everything we wanted, and the staff were so helpful, especially Castro. I left my glasses at the hotel. Castro went out of his way to travel to Reykjavik and post them to Norway, where I was heading next, since there’s no post office at highland. I really enjoyed the stay and highly recommend this place to anyone planning to visit highland in Iceland.

The bed was really comfortable and the room was nice, but the food was mediocre and ridiculously expensive, even by Icelandic standards. With nowhere else nearby to stay, it feels like they can charge whatever they want. They told us there'd be 15 minutes of hot water, but ours ran out after about five. Just a heads-up: plan to eat elsewhere if you can, and keep showers short.

The staff were really friendly, and the included breakfast was excellent. My room was very clean and did what I needed, though it was small by Western standards. I only wish I'd known they would store my food in their refrigerator to keep it cold. I'd stay here again.
