Hótel Hvítserkur

There’s a large room with a pool table where we had fun playing, and the whole place is quiet, so it’s a good spot to rest. The staff were kind and breakfast was included and good. Our room was clean and basic, with two beds, a table and something for washing your hands and brushing your teeth. The shared bathrooms were clean when we arrived, though that can change later. It’s a little overpriced, but still a good place for a night.

The setting is lovely, surrounded by nature, with a river about 200 m away that’s good for fly fishing. You can request and buy a fishing license and guiding at the hotel, and they also offer riding tours. Hvítserkur rock is nearby, and Hvammstangi, Blönduós and other sights are easy to reach. The hotel is in a former school, which gives it a special feel. The young owners put a lot of care into renovating it before reopening in April 2023. Everything was comfortable and very clean. Breakfast came with freshly baked bread each morning, plus the option to make warm waffles. We felt completely at home and will definitely return.

We loved starting the day with waffles before heading out. The hotel is right off the Ring Road, near Hvitserkur and a beautiful black sand beach, and the views from the property are 10/10. It also seems like a great area for seeing the Northern Lights. We were the first to arrive that evening, so it was quiet and we weren’t sure the place was open at first. Once inside, though, it felt cozy and was super clean. It’s a handy stop between Reykjavik and Akureyri if you don’t want to make the whole drive in a day. Some of the bad reviews may come from not checking the website and Instagram, which show the rooms and hotel pretty clearly. Thanks for an awesome stay :)

The best part was looking north from the rooms after midnight and catching a spectacular Northern Lights display. The nearby sea stack and birdlife were amazing too. This is a basic, no frills hotel with shared bathrooms in a remote part of the Vatnses peninsula. The dirt road to get there was good, and breakfast was good as well.
