Fosshotel Hekla

The dining room was the highlight for us: dinner was delicious, the breakfast buffet was excellent, and the service there was great. Dinner is expensive, though, and coffee was only available at breakfast. When I asked for a quick cup in the afternoon, staff politely explained that, despite the nightly cost, there was no coffee service during the rest of the day. We ended up here after road closures and bad weather meant we couldn’t keep our booking at the sister hotel, Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon. The stay was average. Our room was clean and comfortable and got cleaned daily, but the coffee supplies weren’t replenished, apart from the mugs. The hallway had a strange smell, and I couldn’t tell whether it came from cleaning products or something else. The outdoor hot tubs looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in a while, and sitting in water at just 40 degrees celsius felt cold during winter. I’m glad we didn’t have to find somewhere else at the last minute, but I probably wouldn’t choose to stay here again.

We wanted a quiet, cozy stay in the countryside, and that’s what we found. The landscape is lovely, with Hekla visible in the distance, and the fireplace in the bar lounge makes evenings feel especially nice. There are two spacious hot tubs at different temperatures, including one at 36-38C, plus a sauna. The staff were friendly and ready to help. A great little place out in the country.

We only spent one night, but really enjoyed it. Staff were friendly, the rooms were clean, and the views were beautiful. Google Maps directions made the hotel easy to find. Breakfast was included, with tasty homemade breads, a waffle station and more. The staff even shared the homemade bread recipe with us. Dinner is available too, but they ask you to reserve.

The hot tubs were a highlight, especially at night when we could relax and look at the stars. We were lucky enough to catch an amazing display of the Northern Lights on our first evening. Staff were helpful and friendly, and the rooms were comfortable, though some of the decor looked worn and dated. We stayed six nights. The hotel is lovely and an easy drive from Route 1, which made it convenient for visiting most Golden Circle spots. The food was very good, with a decent breakfast selection. We only ate dinner at the restaurant once because it was quite expensive, though that seems normal for much of Iceland. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it.
